Puyguilhem, a Renaissance castle in the heart of Périgord

The Renaissance has accustomed us to build castles on the banks of the Loire, in the « Valley of the Kings ».

However, it is in the heart of the Périgord Vert, a few kilometers from the Château le Verdoyer away, that we discover one of its most beautiful jewels, a castle of the 16th century perfectly preserved, the castle of Puyguilhem.

You can see Puyguilhem in the distance, from the road. Its rounded towers coming out of the forest of Villars.

However, it is only once at the foot of it that we take the full measure of the building. Perfectly preserved, this castle is of a crazy elegance with its two stair towers, its large mullioned windows and its facade adorned with sculptures.

We could almost be satisfied with admiring the outside, but it would be wrong, though. If the exterior is superb, its interior reveals real treasures.

The honorstairs, as you walk in, with its beautiful arches leads in particular to the main hall of the castle where a large fireplace decorated with the works of Hercules awaits you. A real masterpiece!

On the top floor, the carpentry made of oak allows you to imagine the work that demanded the construction of the castle of Puyguilhem.

Depending on your visit, you can also appreciate the wealth of furniture and period decorations. The visits can be done alone or accompanied, according to your wish.

Depending on the period of the year, and especially during the summer, some rooms of the castle come alive through temporary exhibitions. That is a nice opportunity to (re) visit this castle listed in the French historical monuments
