Just 5 kilometers from Camping Château le Verdoyer, the charming village of Abjat-sur-Bandiat invites you to discover an authentic corner of the Périgord Vert. Nestled in the heart of the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park, this lush little town is brimming with hidden treasures that will delight lovers of nature, art, and unique traditions.
A unique artistic walk: The Wood of Creatures (Bois aux Créatures)
Abjat-sur-Bandiat boasts an absolutely one-of-a-kind artistic treasure. Pierre Rapeau, a biology teacher turned outdoor artist, transformed the local forest into a true open-air art gallery. In the early 1980s, this singular artist began painting directly onto rocks and trees, revealing mysterious faces, legendary creatures, and woodland deities hidden within the bark.
Despite the passage of time, the unique hiking trail that winds through the Bois aux Créatures immerses you in a dreamlike world where every tree stump comes to life. You will encounter the “Sky Gobbler,” the “Old Insurgent” with his cruel face, the “Lady-Unicorn” with her red horn, and even the “Father of Wrath” with his accusing eyes. An enchanting walk that will delight both young and old, where art brut meets nature in perfect harmony.
The Garden of Legends and its miniature wonders
The village has landscaped its town center to offer visitors a unique experience: the Garden of Legends. This atypical stroll takes you on a journey to discover a magnificent garden populated by dwarf trees, more commonly known as bonsais. A true haven of peace where patience and Japanese art blend with the gentleness of the Périgord.
Saint-André Church: A Romanesque jewel listed as a Historical Monument
In the heart of the village, Saint-André Church is definitely worth a visit. Built in the 12th century in the purest Romanesque style, this church possesses a rare architectural feature: two adjoining naves. Its octagonal bell tower, raised in the 16th century, proudly overlooks the village.
The building, listed as a Historical Monument since 1994, contains true treasures: a 14th-century polychrome wooden Christ on the cross, two statuettes of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Andrew dating from 1604, as well as a funeral litre painted along the south nave. An exceptional religious heritage that bears witness to the region’s rich history.
The French Conkers Championship: A quirky tradition
Every year in October, Abjat-sur-Bandiat becomes the stage for an original event: the French Conkers Championship. This traditional English sport consists of hitting your opponent’s chestnut (conker) with your own until it breaks. A lighthearted competition that attracts participants from all over France and creates a festive atmosphere in the village.
The event is usually accompanied by a garage sale (vide-grenier) that brings the streets to life from 8 am to 6 pm, turning the day into a true community celebration.
Sports and Leisure Day: Le Verdoyer, tug-of-war champions
Do not miss the famous Sports and Leisure Day in June, which brings the whole region together for friendly activities and concerts. For a long time, the undeniable highlight of the day was the tug-of-war competition, an event where the Camping Château le Verdoyer team distinguished itself several times by winning the championship title. Great atmosphere and team spirit guaranteed!
Local shops and services
Despite its modest size, Abjat-sur-Bandiat has all the shops and services necessary to make your stay pleasant: bakery, cafés, restaurants, motel, tobacconist, physical therapist, as well as several local producers offering fresh vegetables, fruits, preserves, and fruit juices. A post office and a library complete these local amenities.
The Bandiat Valley: Ecological richness to discover
The village takes its name from the Bandiat River, a tumultuous stream that flows through the commune. The valley offers remarkable natural and cultural heritage, with hiking trails that allow you to discover the local fauna, flora, and geology. Fishing enthusiasts will find the Bandiat to be an ideal playground to practice their passion.
Abjat-sur-Bandiat awaits you to unveil its secrets and authentic charm. A village where art, nature, and tradition come together to offer an unforgettable experience in the heart of the Périgord Vert.
