Welcome to Saint-Saud-Lacoussière, one of the largest communes in France, which holds many surprises for you! Just minutes away from Camping Château le Verdoyer, this authentic village in the Périgord Vert invites you to discover its multiple facets: shaded valleys, lush green meadows, peaceful hamlets nestled beneath century-old trees, and an exceptional heritage that tells centuries of history.
A Region of Preserved Natural Charm
Saint-Saud-Lacoussière stands out for its exceptional environment at the heart of the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park. The Dronne, a river with remarkably clean waters, flows through the area and offers excellent opportunities for fishing and refreshing walks. Along its banks, you will discover picturesque mills, some still operational, others transformed into charming dwellings that bear witness to the region’s industrial past.
Hiking enthusiasts will be delighted by the trails that wind through the woods, leading notably to the Trou du Philippou, a charming waterfall nestled in the heart of the Périgord forest. Don’t miss the famous Boviduc, that curious little tunnel dug beneath the old railway line, just a stone’s throw from the campsite!
Le Grand Étang: A Family Paradise
Le Grand Étang (The Great Pond) of Saint-Saud is the must-see attraction for the whole family. Awarded the Blue Flag label several years running, this developed area offers supervised swimming, peaceful fishing, and playgrounds for children. It is the perfect place for a relaxing day after exploring the village’s treasures!
Every year, the Périgord Vert Ski Club takes up residence here for a few weeks to offer the Babyski activity.
A Fascinating Historical Heritage
The history of Saint-Saud dates back to the 9th century, when the village welcomed numerous monks seeking contemplation. The abbeys of Vieille Abbaye, Peyrouse, and Bonnefond housed these religious communities, leaving behind a remarkable architectural heritage. Peyrouse Abbey, built in the 12th century, remains a sumptuous edifice that testifies to six centuries of prosperous existence.
The Romanesque Saint-Étienne Church, also dating from the 12th century, is absolutely worth a visit. Restored between 1952 and 1957, it houses very distinctive frescoes representing the Stations of the Cross, as well as wooden statues originating from Peyrouse Abbey. It was in this church that Abbé Julien, known as Georges Rocal, served his priesthood for 60 years. A recognized writer, he bequeathed to us valuable works describing the customs and traditions of the region, including “Les vieilles coutumes dévotieuses et magiques du Périgord” (The Old Devotional and Magical Customs of the Périgord).
A Village Focused on Gastronomy
Once essentially agricultural, Saint-Saud has passionately embraced gastronomy and tourism! The village prides itself on high-quality local produce: delicious honey made at La Besse (500 meters from the campsite), an unusual ostrich farm on the road to Le Verdoyer, tender and flavourful milk-fed veal (veau sous la mère), mysterious and coveted porcini mushrooms, not to mention the Saint-Saud craft brewery.
Local shops, the Friday morning market, renowned restaurants whose fame extends beyond municipal borders (Hostellerie St Jacques, La Ferme Gourmande with its educational dimension), bed and breakfasts, and campsites welcome visitors under excellent conditions.
The Porcini Mushroom and Milk-Fed Veal Festival
Every year, on the first Sunday of October, Saint-Saud celebrates its emblematic festival! A team of passionate producers had the brilliant idea of combining the region’s two flagship products: the mushroom, as mysterious as it is coveted, and the veal raised according to local tradition.
This festive day offers original recipes, sometimes spectacular entertainment such as the creation of giant porcini mushrooms using a chainsaw, and a huge flea market coupled with a producers’ market. It is the perfect opportunity to taste the authentic flavours of the region and bring back some gastronomic treasures in your luggage!
The Hidden Treasures of Saint-Saud
The Montagnac Arboretum, the result of a private initiative, houses 150 specimens representing 110 different species, supplemented by various shrubs. The generous owner opens this verdant space to visitors for an enriching botanical walk.
The 19th-century Château de Beynac, located on the D83, adds a romantic touch to the landscape. Hiking trails crisscross the rolling and varied landscapes of this granitic region, offering changing panoramas throughout the seasons.
Saint-Saud-Lacoussière thus combines historical heritage, preserved nature, authentic gastronomy, and conviviality, all just minutes from Camping Château le Verdoyer. A village where you can happily stroll, discover, and savour the Périgord art of living!
