Just 5 kilometers from Château le Verdoyer Camping Resort, the charming village of Abjat-sur-Bandiat invites you to discover an authentic corner of the Green Périgord. Nestled in the heart of the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park, this small, verdant town is full of hidden treasures that will delight lovers of nature, art, and unusual traditions.
A Unique Artistic Stroll: The Wood of Creatures
Abjat-sur-Bandiat holds an artistic treasure that is absolutely unique. Pierre Rapeau, a biology teacher turned outdoor artist, transformed the local forest into a genuine open-air art gallery. In the early 1980s, this singular artist began painting directly onto rocks and trees, revealing mysterious faces, legendary creatures, and sylvan deities hidden within the bark.
Despite the ravages of time, the unique hiking trail that winds through the Wood of Creatures plunges you into a dreamlike universe where every tree stump comes alive. You will encounter the “Sky Guzzler,” the “Old Insurgent” with a cruel face, the “Unicorn Woman” with a red horn, or the “Father of Wrath” with accusing eyes. An enchanted walk that will delight young and old, where raw art meets nature in perfect harmony.
The Garden of Legends and its Miniature Wonders
The village decided to landscape its center to offer visitors a unique experience: the Garden of Legends. This atypical walk takes you through a magnificent garden populated by miniature trees, more commonly known as bonsai. A true haven of peace where patience and Japanese art blend seamlessly with the tranquility of the Périgord.
Saint-André Church: A Romanesque Gem Classified as a Historic Monument
In the heart of the village, the Saint-André Church is certainly worth a visit. Built in the 12th century in the purest Romanesque style, this church features a rare architectural peculiarity: two adjoining naves. Its octagonal bell tower, enhanced in the 16th century, proudly overlooks the village.
The edifice, registered as a Historic Monument since 1994, conceals true treasures: a 14th-century polychrome wooden Christ on the cross, two statuettes of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Andrew dating from 1604, as well as a painted funerary band (litre funéraire) along the south nave. An exceptional religious heritage that testifies to the historical richness of the region.
The French Conkers Championship: An Unusual Tradition
Every October, Abjat-sur-Bandiat becomes the setting for a truly original event: the French Conkers Championship. This traditional English sport consists of striking your opponent’s chestnut (conker) with your own until it breaks. A good-natured competition that attracts participants from across France and creates a festive atmosphere in the village.
The event is usually accompanied by a flea market (vide-grenier) that brings the town streets to life from 8 am to 6 pm, transforming the day into a genuine community celebration.
Sports and Leisure Day: Le Verdoyer, Tug-of-War Champion
Be sure not to miss the famous Sports and Leisure Day in June, which brings the entire region together for friendly activities and concerts. The highlight of the day was long, and arguably still is, the tug-of-war competition, an event where the Château le Verdoyer Camping team has distinguished itself repeatedly by winning the championship title. Great atmosphere and team spirit are guaranteed!
Local Shops and Services
Despite its modest size, Abjat-sur-Bandiat offers all the necessary shops and services to make your stay pleasant: bakery-pastry shop, cafés, restaurants, motel, tobacconist, physiotherapist, as well as several farm producers offering fresh vegetables, fruit, preserves, and fruit juices. A post office and a library complete this range of local amenities.
The Bandiat Valley: Ecological Riches to Discover
The village takes its name from the Bandiat River, a tumultuous waterway that crosses the commune. The valley offers a remarkable natural and cultural heritage, with hikes allowing visitors to discover the local fauna, flora, and geology. Fishing enthusiasts will find the Bandiat an ideal playground to pursue their passion.
Abjat-sur-Bandiat awaits you, ready to unveil its secrets and authentic charm. A village where art, nature, and traditions combine to offer an unforgettable experience in the heart of the Green Périgord.
